Database Mail and Outlook 365

Whilst setting up a server, we had to configure database mail. Usually a straight forward exercise but it ended up being a lot more trouble than I had anticipated.

This was because mail was being handled through Office 365.

Firstly the server needs to be the mail.protection.outlook.com MX endpoint.

Then you need to go to the Office 365 delist portal and put in the SQL Servers IP address.

Then we had a Relay Access Denied error which meant that an Office 365 connector needed to be created.

Not as easy as it used to be with an on premise or ISP mail server.
